Getting Psyched to Do Atkins

Your friends and family may give you a hard time but you may be your own worst enemy. Here's how to handle both challenges during the first few days on the Atkins DietTM.

  • ·                     Remember that human beings are remarkably adaptable and, in as little as a week, your tastes will start to change. Soon you'll find that sugar and refined carbohydrates don't tempt you as much as they used to. Your other great ally will be the appetite suppression that is a natural consequence of this nutritional plan.
  • ·                     The first few days you may find it a downer watching other folks eating foods that you're fond of but can't touch. Remind yourself that right now weight loss is your destiny. These moments of temptation are fleeting.
  • ·                     Tell family members that you need a strong show of support and understanding. You certainly don't want them tempting you with illicit food and saying such inappropriate things as, "Don't worry. This tiny piece of cake won't hurt you." It will.
  • ·                     Tell people in advance that you take Atkins seriously and that you'd appreciate their doing the same. We all know what a tricky, emotion-laden business food is. It's not uncommon for families to have issues surrounding food. It's understandable that the other people in your house may not be entranced with your new eating regimen. In the nicest possible way, tell them it's your lifestyle, not theirs. All they need to do is show respect for the major decision you've made. You're about to lose a lot of weight and gain a lot of health. After you've done Atkins, you won't need to request respect for it; the results will speak for themselves.
  • ·                     Have you made a firm commitment? Don't start something this important with the shallow notion of, "Oh well, I'll give it a whirl." At the least, you should have decided that you're going to commit two weeks of your life--without deviation or compromise--to doing Atkins.

If you can commit yourself and think beyond momentary temptations, you can expect great things. By the end of two weeks you'll be walking with new energy, getting out of bed in the morning with new zest and joyously anticipating your encounters with the bathroom scale. You'll be so impressed with how you look and feel, continuing with the program for life will be a foregone conclusion.

Atkins was a life-saver for me! I had gained 40 lbs over about a 3 yr span and it showed no sign of slowing down due to my lifestyle. I commute a total of two and half hrs daily plus work an 8 hour day so exercise is almost nil. With Atkins I found I lost weight even with my minimal activity level! I lost 15 lbs in 4 weeks and I am SO HAPPY! I'm not where I want to be but I do at least have hope now. Thank you.

Thank you! His name is Chino and he's a Tennessee Walking horse. This was taken prior to my gaining the weight, I use it for inspiration. My biggest challenge right now is fresh berries that we grow here on our ranch! I've indulged while picking them but haven't gained weight - just stalled. I'm doing Induction again in the hopes of getting back on track. I don't miss bread etc but fresh fruit...OMG!

Give Chino a kiss on the forhead for me. I love that triangle spot between the eyes on horses.

Fresh fruit like berries can be added in OWL in controlled portions ( 1/2 cup or equivalane of 5 net carbs) after the first two weeks of Induction! It would be almost sinful missing the season. Just count the carbs and stay at 25 net total daily.
Be sure to freeze some for later use.

Kira- I am with you on the fresh fruit!
I was in phase 2, then we went to Myrtle Beach and I fell off the wagon! I am back at phase 1 and can't WAIT til I get to phase 2 so I can eat some raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries! (in moderation, of course!)

Good luck with your journey!

I know exactly what you mean about no time to exercise. Horesback riding is one of the perfect exercises though. I comute 1 hr each to work and work minimum 9 hrs a day so I joined the Y and hit it on my way home a couple of days a week for just a half hour then give myself a real workout of saturday. My body shape is considerably better just from that little bit of exercise. The laundry will wait. You deserve a little time for yourself.

I am a single parent finishing my masters. I graduate in the 15th of August. Though may main reason for beginning Atkins was to regain my health there is going to be a definite benefit to walking across that stage a smaller me. I know what you mean about trying to get to the gym. I don’t commute, however I have 8-9hr work days followed by shuffling my son here and there, attending collegiate meetings in the evening and feeding our farm. I have found little ways to get a little bit extra movement in my day. I ride my bike from my son’s school to work (about a mile and a half); I take the stairs, park extra far from the buildings, and spend more time actually playing with him. You would truly be amazed how much running around you can do with your kid around the house. I have only recently begun but have already had great success I have lost twenty lbs since July 6th.
I noticed you have a horse. Forgive me for assuming but you probably care for that horse yourself. Perhaps you could incorporate carrying feed sacks one by one like twenty yards to the barn or even pushing them in a wheel barrel. I know from experience horseback riding is a great work out. Plus Chino would enjoy it as well. I get most of my physical activity in while working with our animals.
I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Thanks Erin and the best of luck to you as well. I try to spend at least an hour each night working with my horses but, as you know, it isn't always possible. I have a 2 yr old filly that I'm starting and she is my best exercise program yet! Take care,

Hi,
I too did atkins about 10 years ago and lost 20 pounds, I kept it off for about 7 years and then slowly I have gained 15 pounds back. I am so upset with myself for regaining the weight I worked so hard to loose! I am back on induction!
I hope you are doing well on your induction, Good luck!

Yeah, I did Atkins in 2001. I lost 40 lbs in 4 months after gaining the 40 lbs the previous 4 months while taking anti-depressants. I got of the anti-depressants and started Atkins and lost all of the weight. Well, due to no excuse, I have gained 60 lbs since not following Atkins over the course of 3 years! I'm back on Atkins for life!

Hi, My name is Trisha and I am in the process of writing out my first grocery list for the items I will need to get started. I am so glad there is a place you can find all info needed online. The only thing I didn't find is info on medication. I am taking several different meds and want to make sure they are not going to interfere with my losing weight..Since they are prescribed by my doctor I was wondering if most doctors support the Atkins diet or just certain ones. I have diabetes type 2, hypothyroid, high bp, take allergy med, have acid reflux I take med for, wellbutrin, hormone med and have asthma..Wow, that's alot but I faithfully take my meds and am hoping I can eliminate some of them when I lose the weight I need to..Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated..

Don't try and adjust meds on your own, you need to work with your doctor for that. There are more and more doctors that accept Atkins but you have a few fat phobic docs out there. Just tell him you are eating lots of vegetables, a variety of proteins, and healthy fats. Also that you have cut out all bad carbs and only concentrating on the good high fiber ones. No one will argue with that.

I'm a little confused. Am i supposed to count carbs or net carbs? And how am i supposed to know what the net carbs are because the foods i eat never include net carbs just the regular carbs. I must be missing something.

Katiebugs - Cute name!

Net carbs can be found on any food. You simply take your total carb number and subtract the number of carbs from fiber. Also, if there are carbs from sugar alcohols, you can subtract those carbs as well. good luck!

You need only count net carbs. To get net carbs just look at the total carbs and the fiber count. Subtract fiber from total carbs and you get net carbs in whole foods. The carb counter on this web site gives net carb counts. You can use that as reference
Was this comment:

from my understanding you only subtract the fiber from the carbs not the sugar alcohols. I'M CONFUSED, CAN SOMEONE SET THIS STRAIGHT! thanx

Ok, so I am really, really confused. An Atkins advantage bar says it is only 3 net carbs. But reading the label tells me it has 19G carbs - 5 G of fiber-3G sugar alchohols. In my book that means it has 11 net carbs. WHAT AM I MISSING?
Was this comment:

I read that netcarbs= carbs-fiber. Hope that helps a little. Tomorrow is going to be my first day on the diet. I am really looking forward to seeing if Atkins works for me I have big weight loss goals. over the past 2 years I have gained 80 lbs. I feel horrible and tired. So I am hoping the diet will help! I put on 50 pounds over the past year and a half. I found out that my thyroid was a big culprit. That made me feel a little better. But now I have to get rid of this. I started exercising the first of the year and dropped 15 pounds. But, I reached a plateu. So, now Atkins it is! Hopefully if I start losing weight again I won't be as frustrated. I started my induction phase on July30. It was difficult on 8/1 because my neighborhood had a block party with plenty of food and beer. But, I stuck to it and felt good about myself. My family tells me I look fine and not to worry. But, I know I have to lose the extra pounds to be healthy. Thanks for being here.

Good for you. That was the first step; navigating around parties and holidyas is always a challenge and you did it. You will learn how to search and use only the protein, fat, and vegetable options.

I always attend those things fortified. I eat a steak and salad before I go in case I can't find anything. Then I won't starve and be irritable.

Aug 3, 2009
Yo Mort, keep in mind that while on the diet you will reach lots of plateu's but the scale does not always tell a true tale. The mirror and the tape do. If your not losing you could be gaining muscle mass and thats ok, just hang in there and the scale will come around. Keep the carbs down and the exercise up.

Hello everyone, I just love reading all of the information on this site. I started eating the Atkins way in March and was doing fine but was not feeling very well, so I was tested for food allergies, and got my results, and I am gluten intolerant, allergic to all dairy, soy and eggs not the whole egg just the white. Anyway I wrote in and was very impressed with all the people who wrote back to help me. I was wondering Colette if you have any suggestions that might help me in this way of eating, needless to say I have not been eating the way I should have been I guess I got depressed when I found out, the nutritionist told me I would not be able to eat any of this the rest of my life if I wanted to feel better, but I don't want to eat potatoes, fruit and rice and I can't lose weight on it. I love cheese and I don't care much for goat cheese, I tried it yuk. Any help would be appreciated.

I was allergic to dairy as well and I used rice cheese as a substitute. I found it in a health food store and it is low carb, gluten free. Gluten you don't need on Atkins anyway. Soy is tough because that is a great dairy substitute but it can easily be done.

The good news is that after you eliminate these allergies, there may come a time that you will be able to rotate them back into your diet. It sometimes takes a year, but eventually your sensitivity may allow you to have it every 4th or every 7th day. You can challenge when the time is right. Some people never get over them, but some do.

I too was sensitive to a lot of this stuff but I can only conclude those came from all my years of carb abuse. They did abate with time and now I'm eating just about anything on the Atkins list's. It takes time though and hopefully you can move some of these things back into your diet with time

Biggdaddy, you have a heart of gold. Son's are great but daughters are special! Mine now grown and in the Navy and she was Daddy's lil girl, still get misty eyed over her leaving so enjoy her all you can. You are in a unique position working where you are. On the induction and owl phases you won't have much to worry about working around all the food, even the garbage foods as you will be satisfied but you can use your job to your advantage and start picking out all the Atkins list foods you want to add to your lifetime list. This is a life style so taking extra time on the reducing parts of the diet is no big deal, losing 170 lbs is quite a goal and I pray you will accomplish that! I can testify to you that the Atkins life style is the right approach and a very satisfying diet. I have over the years put it to the test not only on research but in my own body as well. On an owl phase I had blood workup done and they want you to fast for b-fast but I cheated. I had bacon and eggs for b-fast anyways and had the blood drawn. All my numbers came back in the midranges for cholesteral and triglycerides came back in the low range. Took 20 pts off both sides of blood pressure too. Only piece of advise my doctor had was to add fish oil's to my diet which I've done. These have been the best numbers I've seen in 30 years so the diet works like they say it does, it will correct a lot of things IF you follow it. And the best part is you can follow it and eat very well. It can be fun leaning how to eat and the creativity that comes with it, just takes some time and effort. Have a great time eating and learning!

Well, a little baby girl to stay healthy for is great motivation! Good for you.
Atkins is the only weight loss weight maintenance program that will allow you to eat luxuriously, and control hunger. What other program will allow you to eat a rib eye steak with Caesar salad, or lamb cops with a salad and cooked vegetables? After the first two weeks you will feel better and have energy for your little girl.
Since you are young and healthy you have the option of starting the program in the OWL phase and still lose weight. That will allow you to have a variety of protein , fats , and vegetables for meals, and an ounce of nuts for snacks as well as a ½ cup to 1 cup of berries ( with whipped cream for dessert)

There is better chance of avoiding boredom with more variety

Hello everyone. I have just joined the community today. Haven't actually started the program yet. However I know that if I don't do something fast that the time is running out. I guess my biggest thing is getting started again. In the past I weighed 430 pounds, then lost 200 pounds and now have put weight back on plus another 60 or 70 pounds to go with it. I know I can't stay in the attitude of not believing that I allowed myself to ever get back here. That mentality isn't going to solve anything. Hi all,

Started Atkins yesterday and it feels soooo good to be back on it! I have tried it several times and it has always worked - I have just never seen it thru to my goal! BUT this time will be different I just know it! Having an online support group will be a step in the right direction for me!
I have 4 granddaughters and am 55, happily married for 37 years now..I am just unhappy with my weight and the lack of energy I have! I feel like I could be doing SO much more with my life.
My husband and I both work on the pipeline in Alaska - work 2 weeks on and then go home to WA state for 2 weeks - - so I am almost semi-retired, LOL.....truthfully I just feel like a slug most of the time and seem to get tired easily...since I gained 50 pounds.
BUT I am ready to try this again because deep down I know it works - -I felt so great on it before - tons of energy and I felt less bloated and just somehow "smaller".
Best wishes to ALL!

Now with the menopause and another 5 stone i am really depressed at times. Trouble is its a vicious circle. You stay in and eat! But I have found that walking has lifted my spirits and put me in a good frame of mind to re-start Atkins again. I was on Atkins several years ago, but my doctor said it was the cause of my cholesterol was so high and she scared me so bad about heart attacks and strokes and the like, I would like to get started again, I think risking cholesterol agaisnt being fat...I'll risk having cholesterol...what's your take on that? Arlene, see the comment I left above for Biggdaddy, the diet will actually lower your cholesteral. Fact is the amount of cholesteral in the venacular end of your blood stream has nothing to do with the amount of cholesteral you put into your mouth. That is controlled by your insulin levels and the biggest stimulant of that is carbohydrate, especially processed carbs. Take the garbage carbs out of your life and enjoy a nice steak and eggs in the morning!

Hi New here, have been on Adkins since June 5th and lost 15lbs. but seem to be stuck, It has to come off, anything I can do to kick start it again......My goal is 10 lbs a month........My Dr. just did my blood work and even though the cholesterol was up some everything else was down, and my sugar was back to normal and triglycerides were way down, but I want the weight to come off again, I do need to exercise more, that is really hard as I have some health problems, but I plan to dance this weight off......LOL.For the cholesterol I decided t o watch t he saturated fats and be sure to get more of the good fats in the diet........Nice to meet you all.....Norma

Norma, you must be getting some hidden carbs from somewhere, need to start keeping a daily diary, also nicotein, caffein, and alcohol will artificially stimulate your insulin levels which acts like carbs to lower your weight loss. The Atkins will go very slow if you don't keep your metabolism up, walking is a great way to do this even jogging. Good luck!

Hello Norma, I can sympathise with getting stuck. May I suggest you get the Atkins book out again and re-read the bits about eating fat. Butter, cream and mayo are all OK on the induction and help stop you feeling hungry. The best fats are olive oil and butter to cook with. Don't give up! Look in the back of the book there are plenty of recipes. Try to accept that after the initial big weight loss a weekly loss of 2lb is normal. The main thing is, as I have found - you feel better! So keep going! Kind Regards Joan

Hi all!

I started doing Atkins 2 weeks ago, and I felt like i was dropping weight. Then my PMS/MS kicked in and I wasn't quite as bloated but definately hungrier than I should have been. I haven't been "good" at all...ate pizza with my parents and ice cream that night. That was two days ago and my weight is like way up now. Can I fix this? Or am I just beyond weightloss help??

I know all body styles are different, but I was curious to find out, what some of the individuals who have been on the diet for a good while, maybe to even narrow it done to people that need to lose about 20-30 lbs., how much they lost in the first 2 weeks of the diet. I am on day 14 and I don't know how much I should be losing, to know that the diet is working for me? Any insight, would be greatly appreciated!

Well I'm back on the diet again. About 8 years back My wife and I went on the Atkins Diet and I lost over 50 lb and boy did I feel great. Well two kids later those 50 lbs found me again. As a hunting guide I need to be in shape, and this extra weight is slowing me down "a bit" lol wish me luck, and good luck to you all.

I'm on Day 8 of Induction and I'm down about 5 pounds. I thought it would be more but have to keep reminding myself that 5 pounds in a week is really good! I've been using the recipes on-line but have heard they include some "no nos" from Dr. Atkins' books, like soya powder and salsa. Also, the bars appear to have more net carbs than is advertised on the front of the box. The Day Break one I'm looking at (Peanut Butter Fudge Crisp Bar...yummm!) says "Only 2g Net Carbs" on the front but the Nutrition Facts list 14g Carbs, Fiber is only 8g and there are 0g Sugar Alcohols. So, I'm confused how that's just 2g Net Carbs. Can anyone help on either of these subjects?! Should I avoid these altogether during Induction to get better results?
Thanks, and I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts!

Thats odd, I don't recall soy powder being bad. The soy protein powder I use says 0 for carbs. Anyone else shed some light on this?

Hello:

My name is Eryn and I am starting the Atkins diet once again. I have had great success on this diet twice now. Once prior to having my daughter (lost 95 lbs) and once after having my daughter (lost 80 lbs). I have allowed myself to gain 50 lbs back and I am not happy. I have tried to get back on the diet several times but continue to fall off track. I know I can do it but find that it is so hard to begin!
I work from home full time so I have plenty of time to prepare good meals, however I constantly grab for things I know I should not have.

Not to mention that I now find that when I stick to the diet for a week or so, I am not seeing such great results as I had with previous attempts. Any ideas as to why?

Today I start my new way of eating. I did Atkins MANY years ago..and did have success with it. I know I must treat this as a life change and choice. I personally can't use the word diet frequently because it's like a mental trigger for me to start to CRAVE what I can't have (kind of childish, but it is what it is). Last time I did Atkins it was with my now ex husband. After seeing him give up and go back to his old way of eating....I have to say I've never seen weight gain come back to a person so quickly and with a vengeance. I know I can do this. I have a wedding to plan for and it happens to be mine.

I've set a goal with my Aunt to lose at least 30 lbs by Christmas and I think it's very possible. I had micro-fracture knee surgery back in Feb and with that and the stress of not working...the weight piled on. I'm limited with what I can do as exercise...so I need the Atkins life style to lose some of the weight to make it even possible to work out and remove the stress the added weight has put on my knees.

What also is an emotional kicker...I'm a nurse. I know better and know the benefits of a healthy life style, but learned very quickly...I'm also human and easy grab and go, and snacking while alone was a serious downfall for me. So now I recognize what I have to avoid and I'm really excited to get this going. I'm ready. I'm sooooo over this weight.

Wow, everyone struck a cord with me. I'm 52 years old, a widow, trying to date again, but need to lose at least 50 lbs., ideally 80 lbs., mainly for health reasons, but I would love to be able to wear whatever I want without checking to see which I look the least weight in.
I had found this wonderful website a few months ago, tried the program a couple of times, made it to 4 or 5 days and then talked myself out of it, hearing what people say about this type of eating not being the right thing to do. Well, back in June, when I went to my doc for my blood tests, (I'm on cholesterol med), I had gained back 20 lbs. I had lost on calories (practically starving myself back in December), well I found it all again. I asked my doctor which he would prefer WW or Atkins, is it o.k. to follow Atkins, and he said that either one is fine, whichever I prefer. I tried WW again, lost a few, but then went off, and that was 2 months ago. I have higher triglycerides since June, and I know that has to do with the carbs and sugar I consume, and I'm petrified of the day I get a blood test back with high sugar. I have enough protein and veggies to get started tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, and will buy things on Monday. So tomorrow is my Day 1. I am going to do this, this time. No more excuses. I was contemplating this on and off over and over, and was going to the market, and made a whole list last week, and changed my mind again. But, now I am just going on with what I have, and will get two days behind me. Arlene

I am totally new at this. It seems confusing. I'm trying to figure do you eat fruits that have a low GI and can you eat whole grains too. Or in phase 1 is there no fruit or whole grain? Can someone enlighten me? Thanks Catman

Hi Catman,

No fruit or whole grains on phase 1. at least 2 weeks. Others can give you more descriptions, but you can go to the main page, and find more info... the synopsis, is: protein, veggies, no more than 20 gms of carbs a day, = 12-15 from veggies, broth, water, water, water, and more water, if you want (which I like) Crystal light or Splenda etc., no more than 3 a day, and count it. Hard cheese, count the carbs, do you have the 2002 book? It's a good reference, otherwise, you can read, on the forums, some people post links, or go to the main page that says "program". good luck. today is my first day, and I intend on doing this, this time.

Colette, I hope you get this, I am currently on the Medifast diet, I am 280 lbs have lost 10 lbs and would like to get to 190-200. The food on Medifast is terrible and very expensive. I would like to do the Atkins plan, but I do have some questions, like how long should it take to get to goal weight, eating 5-6 meals a day to keep meatabalism moving, what to eat during those meals during the day, how important is the 64 oz of water a day. Please help, Thanks you

Hey Colette, I'm in the Induction phase of the diet but my daugther's birthday is a week away and I was wondering that if I was to come in below my induction phase limit of 20 carbs per day for the next week if could have a piece, that's one piece, of cake on her birthday. Or should I just skip the cake altogether?

After 37 years of eating what I wanted and not gaining a lb, I started to gain weight in a big way and now find myself fat and forty!
I've started Atkin's today after doing a bit of research and I think it seems like the best route for me - I've been a slave to junk carbs most of my life but it's only been the last 3yrs they've caught up with me - doh!
I need to lose 42lb and have set my target date at 31 Jan '10.
This website is a great resource and it's brilliant reading everyone else's story - I don't feel quite so alone!

I work long hours and need to lose a significant amount of weight I gained due to an injury....wish me luck...

I joined last night and first day on induction was yesterday I am on a mission to ensure that I am happy with my body and lifestyle. I get really fed up with not wanting to put on my skinny jeans that i love because they are so much tighter and my gluts looks bigger. I want to be happy with the way i look, i am small and most people would think why on earth is she doing Atkins however I want to be happy with me.
My background is a fitness and dance instructor and having 2 boys and a full time job whilst managing 2 football teams has made me give up a lot of my time for me!
It makes me sad to hear so many of my friends not want to do things as they do not like their bodies, I feel that life is so short why not fix the way you feel so that you can make the most out of your life.
Gosh i feel better for getting that off my chest. Thank you for having this site it makes you feel like your not on your own! Nicola

Wow - all of you are so inspiring! My name is Tanya and I am happy to report that I have survived two full days of induction. I have always been terribly addicted to breads and pastas...etc...and therefore have about 30 pounds to lose. The reason why I am writing on this page is because I really want to dive into those great butter cookies I made - but this is doing the trick. Question for those of you who have been on this program for more than 2 years and have kept the weight off - how have you maintained your weight? An even greater cry for help - next week I travel Tues - Friday, and although it's quite easy for me to stay in induction when eating at home, I'm afraid my traveling will blow it for me. Thanks for all of your great comments!

A little late to your post, but I have found that packing some cheese sticks, ham/turkey and the lunch tuna packs (toss the crackers and relish:) helps survive the trips. I also take my adkins book to keep reminding myself about the benefits of the program.

This is the second time I have attempted Atkins. The first time I tried Atkins I did so with my husband (who is only 20 pounds overweight) 2 years ago. He is a bread and potato chip lover and I am a cake and chocolate lover and we both love wine. My husband convinced me that just a little bit of carbs here and there wouldn't hurt me and so my first attempt at Atkins was a complete failure.
After gaining over 50 pounds in the past 2 years and ballooning to a whopping 338 , I decided to try Atkins again but this time I made a commitment to myself that I would do this on my own and this time I will succeed.
I have been on Atkins induction since the end of July and have lost 23 pounds so far. The weight is just melting away and I no longer think about food all day long. I feel more energetic and my blood sugar is already leveling out.
My husband and I went to the movies last week and shared a diet soda while he ate popcorn and, for the first time in my life, I was not tempted to sneak a few pieces!

Yea i like that pasta too, but ive always been not sure of the net carb content. I have acid reflux and when im on Atkins my symptoms seem to get better, although i have a hard time sticking to Atkins!! The Induction phase is very hard, and i love to have an occasional glass of wine or beer, so that probably hurts me too. I think starting in OWL is better for me however u dont get the major advantage of all that fatburning like induction!

I have lost a total of 52 pounds since my doctor told me "One more blood test like this one and you will be considered a type 2 diabetic". I noticed my daughter losing weight on the Atkins Diet so I decided to try it. At my next doctor visit, I had lost 16 pounds and my blood sugar level had dropped. At the 6 month visit, my weight loss was 52 pounds and I had dropped another 4 pounds from a month prior. I recommended this diet to friends who noticed my weight loss. They did not have the same degree of commitment I did and played ping pong with their diet commitment and did not lose steadily like I did and have since gone off their diet. I did not diet one day, or for a few days, and then go back to my old eating habits. I stuck to it faithfully because of a hard earned lesson. #1 reason for sticking to the diet was that after the original 16 pound weight loss in a little over a month, I went out to dinner and "celebrated" my weight loss by having a two cup plate of spaghetti. Three days later I weighed in at my doctor office because I was in the building for a physical therapy appointment for back pain. I had gained back half of what I lost. After that, I never tried to go back to my old eating habits again. I have made that mistake dieting so many times that I gave myself the gift of permanent weight loss. #2 reason for sticking to my personal commitment to lose weight. When I was a child, a relative visited who was a diabetic and I watched horrified as she gave herself an insulin shot everyday. When my doctor told me I was in danger of becoming a diabetic, I took him seriously and did what I could to lose weight. Now, I no longer crave sweets. I eat frozen blackberries or strawberries with equal instead of ice cream. I know protein fills me up and leaves me satisfied longer. I no longer have a distended belly that pushes against my waistband or against my shirts. I am happy where I am but need to lose 30 more pounds. I continue to lose more slowly now, at a rate of about a pound a week just sticking to low carbs and lots of protein, fruits and veggies. I have a blood test in two weeks to check my cholestrol and blood sugar. I have been on thyroid medication for almost 20 years. If I had not changed my ways, I was "flirting" with the metabolic syndrome. My doctor is pleased I have turned things around for myself and I am too.

I think it is funny that you mentioned "I get lazy". I am the same way. Actually, this has been my downfall in the past because I catch myself eating the same things because I am too "lazy" to cook something new or it is sometimes easier to get in the habit of fixing the same things. That is when I stray. Maybe we can support each other with new ideas and recipes

Several years ago, my neighbor and I decided to embark on the Atkins diet. Both of us were at least 100 lbs overweight and were sick of the idea of the way we looked. It was great and we sorta challenged each other. I ended up losing 65 lbs and she lost 85 (she was 20 lbs heavier than me in the beginning, so we weighed the same at the end). But, life happens and I ended up in nursing school and was stressed out continuously because of the amount of studying. By the time I graduated in August 2008, I had gained 25 lbs back. I have fluctuated with those 25 lbs, losing 10, gaining 10. I have tried several diets other than Atkins to lose the weight, but have failed at all attempts. I am miserable and making everyone miserable around me.
The one thing I like about Atkins is the amount of energy I have and for me the diet was easy to follow. I love to "graze" all day and with the Atkins diet this was possible, especially eating veggies and cheeses between meals.
Tomorrow, I am starting induction again. I am 47 years old and know that I cannot maintain this weight. What does it look like when I am approaching patients and talking to them about health issues, when my health is bad from my weight? I am looking forward to making this a lifelong commitment. I know it works and I know how much better I feel when I am on the diet. Thanks for all the support this website brings..I am glad to be there to support anyone who needs it

Hello All,

My brother and I started the Atkins together exactly 3 weeks ago and we are both down about 16 pounds.

I love the "diet" and enjoy sharing the science behind it with people that look at what I eat and say "That can't be healthy"

I am almost never hungry, where as I used to down an entire bag of chips or box of Cheez-Its every night. I almost have to remind myself to eat because I always feel full and am eating waaaaay less.

I started at 217 and am 2 lbs away from getting back in the 100's

Firends, coworkers and relatives are so jealous at how quickly the weight comes off and all the ygreat foods i get to eat.

Now that they have tasted my Atkins "candy bar snacks" they keep stealing them off of my desk!!

My goal is 185 lbs and I hope to get there in the next 3 weeks.

I am staying on the Phase 1 the entire time. It allows me to eat all of my favorite foods and I crave nothing else!!

This plan is the best!!

Terry
