Getting Psyched to Do Atkins

Your friends and family may give you a hard time but you may be your own worst enemy. Here's how to handle both challenges during the first week on the Atkins Nutritional ApproachTM.

  • Remember that human beings are remarkably adaptable and, in as little as a week, your tastes will start to change. Soon you'll find that sugar and refined carbohydrates don't tempt you as much as they used to. Your other great ally will be the appetite suppression that is a natural consequence of this nutritional plan.
  • The first few days you may find it a downer watching other folks eating foods that you're fond of but can't touch. Remind yourself that right now weight loss is your destiny. These moments of temptation are fleeting.
  • Tell family members that you need a strong show of support and understanding. You certainly don't want them tempting you with illicit food and saying such inappropriate things as, "Don't worry. This tiny piece of cake won't hurt you." It will.
  • Tell people in advance that you take Atkins seriously and that you'd appreciate their doing the same. We all know what a tricky, emotion-laden business food is. It's not uncommon for families to have issues surrounding food. It's understandable that the other people in your house may not be entranced with your new eating regimen. In the nicest possible way, tell them it's your lifestyle, not theirs. All they need to do is show respect for the major decision you've made. You're about to lose a lot of weight and gain a lot of health. After you've done Atkins, you won't need to request respect for it; the results will speak for themselves.
  • Have you made a firm commitment? Don't start something this important with the shallow notion of, "Oh well, I'll give it a whirl." At the least, you should have decided that you're going to commit two weeks of your life--without deviation or compromise--to doing Atkins.

If you can commit yourself and think beyond momentary temptations, you can expect great things. By the end of two weeks you'll be walking with new energy, getting out of bed in the morning with new zest and joyously anticipating your encounters with the bathroom scale. You'll be so impressed with how you look and feel, continuing with the program for life will be a foregone conclusion!

Great advice. I'm on my first day and it's hard already! I'm a carb-aholic but this is going to be good for me. I just need to stick to it!
Thanks

I assume by now you are in your second week? I bet it will now be a breeze. I finished my first two weeks las Sunday. But I fell off the wagon that afternoon after my husband tempted me with gummy bears. I love them! After that the whole day was a binge day. Anyway after my binge on Sunday I decided to do 1 more week of phase 1. So far after 17 days including my binge I have lost 11 pounds. I am looking forward to go from my 200 starting pounds to at least 150. Good luck to you too!!

This is my second go. I started the Atkins Diet February 26, 2008 the first time. I am 5'10" I weighed in at 184. By June 10, 2008, I was 144 lbs. I then went on vacation and started back eating my icecream, chips and salsa. So here it is February 20, 2009, I weighed in this morning at 170 so here we go again. I know I can do this, it is hard for the first 4 to 5 days then it just gets easier. You find yourself not hungry, you have a lot of energy and your actually begin seeing results. I am a true fan and I know it works.

thanks so much for that!! i am 2 1/2 weeks in (doing induction for 6 weeks as i'd like to lose 50 pounds) - i've lost 8.5ish so far, and was looking for stories on how much people have lost - and time frames. trying not to get too "must lose it asap" because i know that's not realistic at all, but your story here is giving me a bit of an idea, how well i MAY do if i stick to it and do well (my plan is to do that anyway :)

sorry if that was a bit rambling - i was just so grateful to read your comment! :) :) :)

ps - i am currently 183, and want to get to 140-145....so i am close to your starting weight last year :)

I am on my second go round too. I also faltered while on vacation. I think its harder starting all over, but it was a valuable lesson. I cant let my guard down for anything. Icecream is my biggest temptation, so I just refuse to have it in the house.

Well, today I made my commitment to do this ATKINS again, I did it in 2003 and it worked. I losted over 30 lbs after my baby was born and it only took me 2 months...I need to do it again, is just hard when people tell you is bad and you have 2 kids and a husband to feed everyday...

They say after day 4 or 5 you don't crave certain foods as much and that you are not as hungry. Is that true for you? I am on day 2 and I find myself craving everything sweet. It is probably due to the fact that I know I can't have it.

I write down everything that I eat! I try to eat most of my carbs through eggs and salads. Cheese tends to slow me down. Lean meat makes a great snack too! Have you tried following the sample menus for induction? Be patient, it will come off!! This programs works!

Hi. I am starting my 3rd week and have lost 8.5 pounds so far. My 10 yr old son is type 1 diabetic and I have learned ALOT about blood sugars and what doctors THINK is normal and what is actually normal. My blood sugars are slightly elevated which is more motivation for me to lose the weight. It is easier to do Atkins since my son is eating low carb too.

A high carb diet is the cause of weight gain and high blood sugars which in turn lead to other diseases. Eating a low carb diet only makes sense to me. Low carbs means normal blood sugar, normal cholesterol and normal body weight.

Here's to a great 2009 learning to live and eat the Atkins way.

Hi, I am on my third day THIS time. I lost 50 pounds 5 years ago and kept it off for 2 years! A major blip (understatement!)in my marriage sent me running back to carbs and now I have 80 lbs to lose! I know this diet works, and I've finally had enough and am ready to commit again. It is hard the first few days, headache at times, and I'm sitting here at 9pm with my stomach growling. But I have proved before that it works. I am so ASHAMED that I let all that weight back on (and some), but past is past and I'm ready to forge ahead. I am 58 years old and have Multiple Sclerosis, so it is hard for me to exercise, but it is even harder for me to carry all this extra weight. This is my time and I am committed! And yes, people just have to tell you how crazy it is to be on this diet. But it works, and I did feel so much better when I had the weight off. I'm ready! Let's go!

This is my 2nd time around also.Today is day 1. In anticipation of doing Atkins again, I stayed away from sweets for the past almost 3 weeks. I lost 35 lbs on Atkins before and felt absolutely wonderful! Its just me & my boyfriend at home (wow...48 w/ a boyfriend!) He is very supportive of whatever I want to do "diet" wise. Its me...I have to get off my tail and move. I have no excuses except Im a VERY picky eater. I dont do many vegies so its hard. The only raw veg I eat is carrots :( I eat very simple salads (mostly lettuce) but I NEED to do something! I NEED to lose about 60lbs but I would be ok losing 30. So...here I go again..... Im glad for this community that is available for support. Keep up the great work e'one! See yall soon. R

hi Lovee - please don't be ashamed of yourself. you have had a lot of stress (sounds like), and also an auto-immune disease (i have MS too) to deal with. the important thing is, you know what works, and you are now doing something good for yourself. as for exercise, i know what you man - although i don't know the extent of your disease of course...but really, if you are following the plan, you will lose weight even if you can't always exercise (obviously - to anyone else reading this - it works better and faster, and is healthier if you DO exercise, but not all of us can all the time :)- do what you can, when you can, and feel good about it! also- if you're humgry girl, grab a slice of roast beef with cheese and pickle in the middle! if there's one thing i've learned (in my whole couple of weeks on this thing :) :) - it's to eat when you're hungry - nothing is worse than a growly stomach, eh?

take care, and keep reminding yourself that you are doing something good for yourself!

That's exactly what happened to me, I lost all that weight and became "hot" (according to my hubby) so I got pregnant. Just think of how good and sexy you'll feel again, after having kids I know first hand how hard it was for me to feel attractive again, This is my second day and I already lost 1.5 lbs granted I am a runner,so my weight should be gone by the 14 day, I only want to lose 15 lbs, so that I can gain muscle weight and definition...You go girl! Hello fellow Atkins followers. I just wanted to say Hi! I am on day 9 and down 7lbs. This is my first real try on the diet, I "attempted" it a few years ago and wasn't really into it but now two kids and 80 lbs later, I am determined, focused and committed. I find it easier to stay motivated while reading Dr. Atkins book, so I leave it on the table and read a few pages while eating. I feel that helps alot. I am getting some support from the hubby, but he works construction and loves his white rice, potstickers and chocolate. I find it is a real test of my characher to not munch away or tell my self "Oh, I will have just one". No way not going to happen. I have invested to much into this to turn back now. I have two beautiful girls who are relying on me to be a HEALTHY role model for them and I intend on doing just that! Thanks for listening.

I am 55 years old, pretty much tried every diet under the sun. Through yoyo dieting the scale read 243 pounds this morning, but it is down from my all time high weight of 268 pounds, which is a positive. The ideal weight for me at5'3" is 125 pounds, so my goal is to lose 122 pounds. I have done well on the Atkins diet in the Induction phase before, but I found that I stray from it usually by the third or fourth week. I feel that this time I can persevere because I know the pitfalls and the patterns that lead up to the failures. I am abandoning the all or nothing mindset that led to the failures of the past. I will report back weekly on my success. Weight on 1-22-09=243 pounds. Goal weight = 125 Good luck to everyone. THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS AND INSPIRATION!

Hi All. I lost about 45 lbs a few years back and then stopped and gained back about 30 lbs. In the middle of '08 I read an article in the New England Journal of Medicine that promted me to go back to this lifestyle and I lost 30 lbs in 6 weeks....I got a bit off track with the holidays and gained about 7 lbs. that's the beauty...go back on induction briefly and you're right back on track. Anyhow, thanks for the inspiraction. For those of you who have friends/family telling you this is not safe go online to the New England Journal of Medicine. Back in Oct-Nov there was a study done with several thousand people. They compared 3 diets: low fat, mediterranean and low carb. No big surprise here: low carb lost the most & kept it off; mediterranean was close, but they did not keep it off and low fat had terrible results. Further, they checked cholesterol, triglyicerides, glucose, etc and everyone did substantially better on low carb. Obviously, you don't want to eat bacon every day for the rest of your life, but if you do it correctly, this is not a diet, it's a way of life

Thanks for the NEJM article reference. My physician recommended this diet specifically because I'm Type II diabetic, etc. I'm lucky to have the full support of my M.D. in starting the Atkins Diet - I know there are lots of "old school" doctors who just can't seem to understand the physiology involved.

I'm only on Day One, but it's a great day for me even with the 150 pounds or so that I need to lose. The journey begins with this first step and all the months of not taking that step has only been wasted as far as my life goals are concerned.

Speaking of steps, I'm hoping to incorporate some walking every day. I don't expect that to be easy, since I'm really embarrassed to be seen, but one step, one block, one mile...it all has to start somewhere and I am SO ready.

Thanks for the support here.

My daughter lost a bunch a weight on the Atkins diet a few years ago, so I tried it a couple of years ago. It was extremely difficult because my husband did not think this was the way to eat. I gave up because it was too stressful, and he convinced me that I was doing more harm than good. After a visit to my doctor a year ago, I found my cholesterol was over 300, I was tired all the time, and I was at least 30 pounds heavier than I wanted to be. Of course, she put me on medication and ordered a low-fat, high fiber diet. I followed it faithfully and only lost about 5 pounds and didn't feel any better, and I was always looking for more to eat.

Last summer I heard another report that was shown on ABC that the Atkins diet was proven to be healthy and a good way to maintain a healthy weight. That convinced me, so I bought the latest book and have been reading everything on this website. I have found it extremely easy to stick with the plan. I found that I feel satiated much longer and the food allowed is what I like best anyway. I have also started walking every day and now that it is too dark after work to walk, I go to a local gym.

The great part is that I was 149 pounds and now I weight 115 pounds. (I am 5'2") I explained to my husband that I need to do what I feel is best for my health and have stuck to my guns. I didn't mention that I am 64 years old. I knew this was all worth it when my 21-year old granddaughter said "Grandma, you have a hot little body".

I am about to start on this diet again - I lost 28lbs after my son was born (he's 8 now) and everyone said I looked great but I've put it all back on now - another baby didn't help..But I'm determined because I am heading toward 40 and don't want another 'fat summer' where I look at others in their nice summer clothes while I wear jeans & t-shirts. I'm 38 and 172lbs. I want to be about 126 so it's a long way to go. I know it works, and understand the principles behind it, but get stalled sometimes because of the food 'limitations'. I have 2 kids & a husband to feed, so it'll be cooking seperate meals but I thknk for me it's the only way. Losing weight on other slimming clubs like weightwatchers doesn't do it for me because the odd lb or two just isn't enough. Good luck to everyone who's taking part.

Well, I am like the rest of you, returning to what works for me! Several years ago I began this diet and lost about 20 pounds. I kept it off for a few years and decided to buy horses as a way to get more exercise. After suffering from 3 horse related injuries, I slowed down, ate more and now am miserably fat! None of my clothes fit, in fact I don't fit any more. I dont mind growing older at 59 years but I do mind growing fat - that is what makes me feel old. I need help and encouragment and I will offer the same to you. My goal is to lose 30 pounds.

Hi everyone - I am starting Atkins on 10th February at 7a.m to be precise - only because the 9th is my birthday and as my husband as booked a table at a fantastic restaurant I intend to consume vast amounts of food!

In preparation I am reading everything I can about Atkins so I am armed with all the info I need to stop me falling at the first hurdle.

I have 49 pounds to lose so will have to be careful until my birthday as I don't want my weight to increse between now and then.

I crave carbs: pasta, potatoes, rice and I think I will find it initally quite hard work.

Wish me luck!

7 years ago I lost 88 pounds on this weight loss program in 9 months. It was because I was tired of being over weight. I kept it off for 5 and a half years. I have gained back 60 in the last 2 years. Now weighing 191.4 this morning, I cannot figure out how to get back on track. Every week for the last few months I try, but I last a day or 2. I know this program works. I did it and was successful. How do I get the motivation to do it again?

Hey all,
I have cruised the web site and find it surprising that so many are returning to Atkins. I too am returning. I started in June 2004, lost 55 pounds and took a 70 mile hike with my son. It was definitely a high point in my life. Unfortunately when I returned from the hike I did not return to Atkins and slowly returned to my old habits. The result, I put it all back on plus 20.

So here I am again, just as determined as ever and motivated by another hike with my youngest son in July 2010. This time I am wiser and will not fall into the carbohydrate trap again.

I like the web site now, lots of good information, motivation, and tools. Thus the reason for my post, the on-line tools feature a suggested meal planner. It allows you to select the phase of Atkins you are on but the carb calculations don’t appear to jive with the corresponding phase. As an example I will start with Induction, or Phase 1. The first week’s menu looks great! But the carb count is 10.2 carbs higher than allowed. There is a disclaimer to adjust with vegetables if the carbs are not correct.

Has anyone experienced this? Used this tool? I wish there was a grocery list planner also.

Anyway, thanks for your replies.

I'm impressed with all of you and your dedication. Keep it up! This is my second journey through Atkins. Like most of you second-timers, I suffered through some stressful ordeals that I still hadn't gained the coping skills to get through and went back to carbs to "feel better". Well, I don't feel better, I feel like cr@p! And I'm up by at least 30 lbs again. So I'm very enthused. I'm on day 4. I haven't weighed myself at all - guess I'll do that today. But I haven't suffered any cravings or headache. And they suggest a supplement of l-glutamine for those of you that do suffer headaches from the lack of carbs. Helps eliminate cravings too.

P.S. Looks like Joey "10ccash" might be a punk, eh? Please, 155 lbs in a week and a 109 mile marathon. Lots of us are serious here...

I am just starting and very scared. I've only tried to lose weight once or twice in my life. So I feel like I'm clueless and everybody's got something to say. I've got a husband and 3 boys to feed and I'm wondering how this is going to go down. I want to really change my body though. I'm wanting to lose 50 lbs but I'll be thrilled just to see any change! I'm so unhappy with how I look, I think about it all of the time.

Keep that goal in mind. Think postive thoughts that you will achieve your goal. Place pictures of yourself everywhere from times past when you looked the way you want to look now--as a constant reminder to stay the course. If you have given birth to 3 boys and are raising them all, you've got will power. You can do this!

I have been on Atkins for 4 weeks now. Over the last two years, I lost 28 lbs, and then regained most of it. I yo-yoed for severl months, before finally setting my mind to starting back over. However, my body is stuck. I have only lost 3 lbs over the 4 weeks and I have been in phase 1 the entire time. Help! I am getting very discouraged.

Before you get discouraged and lose your commitment to long-term healthy eating habits, understand that plateaus occur in any slimming-down process especially after yo yo dieting.Stick with the program and your weight loss will pick up. You may stay at one weight for a month, then suddenly drop three to four pounds. But it is also important to ascertain whether there is another reason.
The scale is the least reliable reflection of fat loss.Look at other markers. Are you feeling better? Do your clothes feel looser? If you're losing inches but not pounds, your fat cells are still shrinking. Remember, You're only on a plateau if there's no change at all for more than four weeks, so stay in Induction for that time.
Hitting at least one plateau is normal and to be expected. It's most likely to happen, and most difficult to break through, if you've come to Atkins after years of yo-yo dieting. We often find that a person will plateau at the same points he or she always used to reach on previous diets. These are the weights at which you naturally start to resist weight loss.
For many people, even those resistant to weight loss, breaking through a plateau is often a matter of making simple dietary changes. You may need to modify your lifestyle. Here are some items to consider:
1. Look for Hidden Carbs
2. Don't Skip Supplements
4. Move Your Bod …..Exercise

I have spent the last two days studying the progam, making food lists, checking out recipes and finally today I went to Costco and spent $450 on everything my husband and I will need to make the Atkins way easy. I'm looking forward to starting it tomorrow morning. I also started Aquaform and doing some exercise programs on the Channel ONE, Body, Mind & Spirit. I have diabetes type II so I will be doing a lot of meter testing too! I'm looking forward to hearing from all of you.

Hi Ken,
Try not to go below 20 net carbs daily. You will just feel better and avoid side effects that often comes with the first two weeks of Induction.

Hi Celry,
Good for you!The more prepared you are the better your chances for success. Keep us posted.

Dear Collette: Are the cazrbs in celery. avacados, tomatoes, and lettuce the good carbs or bad. Also I heard that there are recalls on the atkins bars with ppeanut butter, I live in Canada and that is what they have said on the Detroit New Station. They gave a link and they are listed. They help me get through the day. Also do you still recommend checking you urine with the ketones sticks. Thank you. Jo-Janet

Hi Jo-Janet,
The carbs in celery, avacados, tomatoes, and lettuce are good carbs, but you still need to count the carbs. In Induction you will be consuming 20 net carbs, which is total carbs minus fiber grams.

As far as Canadian recall is concerned ;
As a result of the expanded recall, Atkins has determined to voluntarily recall four Atkins products out of an abundance of caution because they contain granulated peanuts. The only Atkins products affected by this voluntary recall are: Advantage Chocolate Peanut Butter; Advantage Peanut Fudge Granola, Day Break Peanut Butter Fudge Crisp, and Endulge Peanut Caramel Cluster.

We are confident all our products are safe. Atkins requires extensive laboratory testing of all ingredients used in every Atkins product, and our finished products are also rigorously tested. As a result of Atkins’ food safety protocols, and the extensive laboratory testing on all Atkins products, no Salmonella contamination has been found in any of the Atkins products subject to this recall, but the Company is taking this step to assure our consumers that food safety is our highest priority.

No other Atkins products are affected by this recall so until we can get these back on shlf you can try our other flavors.

I'm on my 3rd day and I weighed 62kg. this morning. I excercised at home and I am feeling great after my 3days on Atkins.I felt very tired and had migraine attacks the first 3days of Induction.Do I need to go on my OWL phase, or I have to continue my induction until 2wks? I think I can't handle this anymore of waiting for another week of induction, since I don't have time cooking your recommended recipe.Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

I will list out the questions and post an answer for each;
Question;
"Is coffee with half & half allowed? Are we supposed to limit our caffeine intake??
Answer;
Yes, coffee with half and half is allowed but you should limit to two cups daily.
Question;
1st-can you drink Crystal Light?
Yes
I also found cheese with 0 carbs 3oz ok?
Yes, max 4 ounces daily
Can you eat the Atkins bars daily, if so how many?
Yes but limit to one max two daily

Do I need to go on my OWL phase, or I have to continue my induction until 2wks? I think I can't handle this anymore of waiting for another week of induction, since I don't have time cooking your recommended recipe
Answer;
You can move to OWL now if that helps you.
I do very little cooking due to my work and travel schedule. I rely heavily on cooking on the weekend and using leftovers all week. When I run out of food, I use canned tuna, salmon, and sardines. I cut my veggies on the weekend and keep in cold water in the refrigerator and grab my daily allowance each day.
I always have my bar and shake with me in case a meal is delayed.

Thanks for answering my questions, Colette. I do have another one. I was wondering, how do you get 12-15 carbs out of veggies every day? Considering how little carbs are in most veggies, it seems like a lot of food to eat. Can you drink V-8 juice? I've found that a 5.5 ounce can has 6 carbs. Can I count all 6 to veggies? At least that would give me a head start. Thanks again.

It is esier reaching 12 net carbs using veggies like cauliflower, tomato, or avacado and the like. We have also found the side effects of Induction are less severe when individuals eat enough vegetables. If that is turning our to be too difficult for you, you can use a tomato juice
and count total carbs minus fiber toward your veggies. However, there isn't much fiber in tomato juice, so make sure the other 6 net carbs come in the form of a salad.

Well, this is my second week on the diet. I am very committed to this lifestyle change, but it doesn't make it any easier. I'm getting tired of salads with all the "free" veggies. I guess it's time to research recipes.

I am being advised by my RE (Reproductive Endocrinologist) that I have to lose weight before starting treatment in hopes that my body will regulate itself and make it easier to concieve. I can't began to tell you how frustrated my husband and I are. I have tried Atkins once before 3 years ago and saw results in less than 2 weeks. I am hoping for the same if not better results. I will be looking to all you to help me make my weight loss of 60#'s a reality.
I'm not sure if I should have had this in the Induction phase, but last night I had a chocolate mousse. I made it using:
about 1/2 cup of whipping cream
1 tsp. of unsweetened cocoa (dark)
1 tsp. splenda

I made this in my mini cuisinart.

OMG sooo...good!

Good luck to all!

Hi
I'm on week 3 and have lost 5lbs - i was 172 to begin and am now 167 - this is going to be slow & steady for me. To be honest, I'm not actually counting the carbs in what I eat as much as I should, but i know that a lot of people do it to the letter and I envy them - I'm trying to stick to the induction phase for as long as I can - more than the first two weeks because of the amount of weight I need to lose. I know what foods to stear clear of. I eat plenty of salad greens ( my packed lunch consists of (insert random meat/fish)& salad) and I really like the Atkins bars - they are my only sweet treat. I actually didn;t lose anything for a week,(but I suffer badly from 'time of the month' problems) so the 5lbs was 3 in the first week, and 2 since saturday.. Good luck to everyone and keep thinking positive thoughts and imangine yourself as your slim self, that's my motivation.

I was on Atkins a couple of years ago and did really well but ended up in hospital (not diet related) fell off the wagon & gained all the weight back. I'm on Atkins again and this time I know 'll do it. I'd like to lose 90 lb but would be happy 40 by this summer. I started the end of January and have lost 13 lb. This is the first Valentines' day that I didn't eat any chocolate and didn't feel deprived. Woohoo!

I'd like to know how long you need to stay on phase 1 or does it depend on how much weight you need to lose? I have stuck to it so far and am willing to stay with it as long as it takes.

Well, I'm gonna start this all over again on Tues Feb.24th. We have a girls night out at work planned for Monday the 23rd. So I'll wait and start it the following day.
This is my 2nd go round on Atkins. In Oct. 2000 started this plan and went from 189 to 154 by April of 2001. I was doing great, then got engaged and between all the running around planning our wedding, quik meals, etc. I started eating carbs again and went back to my old lifestyle. I was 164 by my wedding day that September. So now I am 8yrs older, still married and gained back all the weight I lost plus some.
I was so happy with the way I looked that April and I sabotaged the whole thing w/my binge carb eating and not being able to say "no" when sweets are offered me. Now I don't like the way I look, I am in Plus size clothes for the first time ever and my BP is high again.
This time I need it to be a life style change but will it be harder with a husband. I wasnt married the first time I lost all the weight. He is supportive.

The first two weeks are the hardest! Just hang in there.
There are a few people who experience fatigue or light-headedness during their first week following the Atkins Nutritional Approach. Most often this means that the process is going too fast for their particular metabolism, they're losing weight, water and certain minerals too fast, and their bodies can't keep pace with these quick changes. One sign is ascent weakness: You feel weak when walking up stairs. These reactions can be aggravated by hot weather, when you are already losing minerals through sweat or by taking a diuretic. Obviously, drinking lots of water is essential.
If you experience these problems, simply slow down your weight loss by adding another helping of vegetables to your evening meal or one or two ounces of salted nuts nuts or seeds. Although your body would almost certainly adjust during the second or third week, there isn't any good reason for feeling washed out and sickly for even one day. After the symptoms abate, go back to the lower level of carb intake.
Another occasional problem is leg cramps at night due to a rapid excretion of calcium, magnesium or potassium. Be sure you are getting enough of these minerals in your multivitamin or take a separate multimineral supplement. If you are still getting leg cramps, you may need to add more.
Another mechanism that can cause adverse reactions is withdrawal symptoms. Quite a few people have addictions to foods they consume every day without being aware of them. When you suddenly stop eating a food or ingredient you are used to, as you do when you start Atkins, you may experience withdrawal. Common offenders are caffeine, sugar, wheat and other foods capable of quickly changing blood-sugar levels. Withdrawal symptoms vary widely, ranging from fatigue, faintness and palpitations to headache and cold sweats.
Bad as they seem, experiencing withdrawal symptoms is really good news. The withdrawal process is usually completed within one week, and afterward you should feel better than ever—unless, of course, you re-addict yourself. If you cannot stay the course and progress through withdrawal, do it gradually by consuming progressively smaller amounts of an addictive food until you get to zero. The more severe your withdrawal symptoms, the more you stand to gain from abandoning the food that is causing them. A food that demands to be eaten daily is often a key to a disordered metabolism.
Finally, unless you are extremely metabolically resistant, you will start losing considerable weight during Induction. The amount and rate at which you lose can vary dramatically depending upon your age, level of activity, whether you are taking hormones or other drugs, your degree of metabolic resistance and other factors. The median weight loss from two weeks doing Induction is 10 pounds for overweight males and six pounds for overweight females. But do understand this: On any weight-loss program, the first weight lost is water weight. Atkins is a particularly effective diuretic, so the water weight tends to come off fast. But be assured that after four to five days, the pounds that come off are primarily fat.
Congratulations! You are really doing Atkins now. Induction will be only the first step of a natural progression to your permanent way of healthy eating.

Ive been on it for 3 days and I have lost 14 pounds! HALLELUIA! I have Polycystic-Ovarian Syndrome and I read that low carb diets are the only ones that really work for women with it and am proud to say it is true I cannot wait to be at my goal weight of 150!

I too face the challenge of managing PCOS and weight gain post two babies. I lost 40lb in 2003 and fell pregnant with my son, where I gained 55lbs which I didn't lose before falling pregnant again with my daughter, gaining an addtional 10lb to the original 55lb. Thankfully I did manage to lose 41lb just through luck and moving around after 2 kids, but I really miss being healthy and having lots of energy, and I am tired of the carb high-lows each day. I have been following another low carb regime for two weeks, but there was not enough information for me. Since discovering the excellent website Atkins offers and that I can purchase advantage bars in the supermarket locally I am thrilled - I am about to commence induction and get my body and my self esteem back - no more baggy pants and belly covering tops this winter I am going to make it back to me...

Hi Colette,
Your many above responses are so informative and helpful.

My question is: I have 10 lbs to go (YES!!)- And I am wondering, is it just as effective/more effective/less effective if I go the "Induction" route to try and lose it a little faster (instead of the recommended Phase 3)? Perhaps keep myself at 20-30 carbs week after week until the weight is gone. ? I understand this tweeking may not be advised, but I wanted to know your opinion.

THANK YOU in advance. !

To WildCherryMommy;

There is no danger in reaching your goal weight in Induction except you won't be able to find your carb tolerance. Knowing your CCLL and CCLM is helpful in allowing you to know how many carbs you can take in before you begin to gain weight.

We need to work on moving you up the ladder and finding your carb tolerence. It may be 30 or 50 or 60 grams daily, but we need to find it.

You will have a much better chance at keeping the weight off if your gradually and slowly add healthy carbs back in . It will slow down weight loss somewhat, but totally worth the end game.

Hi Galfiro,
We recommend that lab tests be repeated no fewer than 6 months after starting to control carbs. In some people there is a temporary increase in total cholesterol as the body breaks down stored fat for energy. Look at your HDL (known as "good" cholesterol) level. A rise in total cholesterol levels could be a good thing, if it's attributed to an increase in HDL cholesterol.

You also need to look at a third component of your blood tests: triglycerides. Cholesterol rises in some people when triglycerides drop significantly. If that drop is greater than the LDL increase, your lipid profile may be improved.

If you've been following Atkins for some time and your cholesterol levels have not come down, something else is going on and will require further investigation by the doctor.

High cholesterol that has a genetic component usually responds to changes in diet, but may be difficult to address with diet alone. There are a variety of supplements to consider that can help. These include: Pantethine, Essential Oils garlic, non flushh niacin, and fiber.
Exercise is also an important component to the management of high blood lipid values. Elevated blood values will require follow-up with the doctor until acceptable levels are attained.

The kinds of fat you should avoid are chemically altered, processed hydrogenated oils, such as margarine and shortening. Look for cold-pressed or expeller-pressed oils, and store them in a dark, cool place to keep them from going rancid or oxidizing. High heat changes the molecular structure of the cell and will transform even a good fat into a trans fat so be sure not to burn oil or allow it to smoke while cooking.

Cut down on the sausage and cheese for now

Help, all you successful Atkins followers! I am in week 4 of induction. My husband has lost 22lbs (we are doing this together) and I have only lost 7lbs! I can say my only difficulty is drinking the water and I tend to have sugar free jello with whipped heavy cream every night to fix my sweet tooth. 7 lbs is pretty good! Think of what 7 lbs of butter look like, that is a lot of fat. men will always lose weight faster than women.

First, assuming that you are doing Atkins properly, recognize that there may not be a problem at all. Different people will respond to Atkins differently; some consistently lose weight while others do so in stages. Don't compare yourself to others and become overly concerned with short-term results. Certain medications, activity level, hormonal status and age can cause differences in weight loss. Also, make sure your expectations of weight loss are realistic.

I've read all the comments...not sure what the final conclusion is...2nd time around, what to expect? I did really well the first time on Adkins. I felt better than I had in a long time. That was about 4 yrs ago, then I put on the 30 lbs. I lost...I'm back to being tired and sluggish. Is there anything special/additional anyone can recommend that will help achieve the same results as the first time? I'm older and wiser now...I won't let this happen to me again. I figured out that if I weigh myself every morning I can nip the problem in the bud before it is out of control and then I have to go back to square one. I could have just weighed myself and at the first sign of 5 lbs more I would have known I was pushing my luck. Well this time I have promised myself I will do it right and stay there. I'm 44 this year and lord knows it doesn't get easier. All these new tools that are available on the site are great! The support and shared experiences really make such a difference when your feeling down about your progress.

Anyone who is doing this for the second time and seeing results...if you don't mind sharing your experience I would be most grateful!!

Hello, all.

It's amazing how many of us know the Atkins program works, have done the program before successfully and then gained the weight back because we left the life style behind. I can count myself as one of those that know the diet works, but I can also count myself as one of those who never did the program correctly.

A few years ago, I lost 35 on Atkins. But I stayed in Induction the entire time, scared that if I moved on to OWL I would stop losing weight. And that fear is a big part of why I failed. I couldn't stick to Induction forever -- the food choices are too limited and it gets old and boring after a while. I think the only way to be successful in this program is to do it the right way (great big Duh moment here).

So, having come to this revelation, I'm starting tomorrow, again, and am making a promise to myself that I will do Induction for no more than 3 weeks before moving on to OWL. I will exercise in some form on a daily basis, alternating weight training and some type of cardio, and I will drink at least 84 ounces of water/crystal light per day. After three weeks, I will let go of my comfort zone of Induction and step out into the "real" world, where I will learn the proper way to continue weight loss on the Atkins program.

Lastly, I will use this forum and the support of tthose who are struggling right along with me to keep me on track and focused.

And I'll do all of these things because I'm worth iit :o)

Hi everyone.

I started Atkins on Feb 23rd. I was 203 pounds - the same weight I was when I was nine months pregnant 4 years ago!!!! I'm now 197 pounds! - in only 6 days!!! I am just so disgusted with my weight that I have to do something. On top of everything else, I have high blood pressure! 20 years in the military and after I retire I get high blood pressure?!! I know it's because I've become alot more sedentary than I was then.

I've tried every other diet in the world and I haven't been able to stick with anything. Just like most of you, I've done Atkins before and I KNOW that it works. I just allowed myself to get bored with it because I wasn't using all of the foods available to me. I thought I could only eat meat! DUH!!!

I am so much more motivated this time! I'm so tired of wearing the same outfits all the time and not taking off my coat because I'm embarrassed by my weight. I went to Cancun a few months ago and I couldn't enjoy myself because of my weight!! I refuse to go through that feeling again! I've already picked out the clothes that I will wear this summer. I will reach my goal weight and I will maintain it. I will not allow myself to be that other person again! Best of luck to us all!!!
