Today my Doctor told me I had to lose 80 lbs. I knew I was heavy and I wasn't really copmfortable with my weight. But when my Doctor told me that my weight should be @ 120lb's. I told him that he was nuts!! I'm going to be 57 this year and I just want to be health and be around for awhile yet. He told me about Adkins. So here I am. This is completely different than I'm use to, but I plan to keep it up.

Welcome to a new way of life. This way of eating is the best and you will soon find out what you have been missing. This Forum has tons of information and very knowledgable people. Collette is the nutritionist on this site and she also worked with Dr.Atkins. Don is the moderator here and he too, is a very wise person. Everyone here has been where you are and can offer advice. Feel free to ask questions and make comments. This forum is here for everyone to read, learn and enjoy. This way of life will work for you if you let it.
Remember Induction is 20 net carbs with 12-15 being veggies. Net carbs are carbs-fiber. You need atleast 64 ozs of plain water daily (no additives except lemon and cucumber and you must count the carbs). You are allowed 3 servings of sweetner per day. Dr.Atkins suggests in his book (2002 edition of Dr.Atkins New Diet Revolution, which you need to get) to avoid aspertame. Low carb products such as breads, pasta, tortillias aren't allowed on induction. Atkins is about whole foods not processed. Read all ingredients for hidden things Ex. sugar.corn syrup, sugar alcohols, grains. Alcohol is also not permitted on the Induction phase. It will take you out of fat burning mode and will burn the alcohol off first. This can set you back 2-3 days.
One of the keys to success on Atkins is meal planning. Always know what you are going to eat that day/week. Alot of us cut up veggies, weigh them out, and bag them with amounts and net carbs on the bags for the day/week. It makes things easier.~renee~

Welcome Teri.
I'm 54 and want to be healty for my three grandbabies. Plus I'm sort of Pre-Diabetic so I really have to watch it.
This is a great forum. Just read and read and read again. So much encouragement and information here.
Also, remember sometimes us "senior" types have a bit longer time to lose the weight. After all we've been packing it on for years.
Anyway, Good luck. Ask any question you want here and someone will help you find the answer.

That's so wonderful that your doctor sent you to this program, so many of us have to fight the medical community!
Don't sweat the entire weight loss, just set 10 lb goals and celebrate each one and before you know it you'll be at or near your overall goal.
And you do not have to feel deprived or hungry on this program -- though you will have to fight your brain's desire for some of your old favorites. It's really important to take those thoughts captive and replace old favs with new favs. There's some great treats that can be made and are perfectly legal.
Welcome and good luck,
Audrey
great advice from - renee, jul and audrey - I'm just stoppin' in to say hello and welcome - tam
Yes, that's awesome that your Dr. recommended it.. A lot of them fall under the illusion of the general population and think it's all meat and cheese only. I haven't eaten this much vegetables ever and I have always loved my veggies. Good luck and keep us posted..
Hi Teri
I am new to Atkins too. I started Monday and joined up and started posting yesterday. There are alot of knowledgable posters on this site and it's a very friendly community.
I am 52 (53 next month) and like you, have quite a bit of weight to lose(60 lbs). I am very motivated and determined as well.
Anyhoo, just wanted to welcome you to the boards. We can keep each other motivated!
Be well.
Lizzie
Thanks to all of you for our encouragement. I am looking forward to being a healthy person again. I'm not sure if I want to 120LBs but I keep going to see where it takes me. Funny thing in 2 days I have lost 2-5 lbs. Amazing!
